For years, I carried this heavy thought in the back of my mind: If I stop, everything will fall apart.
Maybe you’ve felt it too.
The second I sit down with a cup of coffee, my brain starts racing: The laundry is piling up. Did I sign that permission slip? The kids still need dinner. Suddenly, resting doesn’t feel like rest at all—it feels like failure.
And yet, when I never slow down, I turn into a version of myself I don’t like—short-tempered, drained, and running on fumes. That’s when it hit me: rest isn’t selfish, it’s survival.
Here are 6 things that are helping me let go of the guilt and finally allow myself to breathe:
1. Reframe Rest as Productive
Rest used to feel like wasted time, but now I see it as an investment. When I pause, I come back calmer, kinder, and with more energy to give my family.
2. Start Small
An entire afternoon nap? Not happening. But 10 minutes with a book, a quiet walk, or just closing my eyes—that’s doable. And it still makes a difference.
3. Put Rest on the Calendar
If it’s not planned, it won’t happen. Blocking out “quiet time” the same way I would a doctor’s appointment makes it more likely I’ll stick to it.
4. Drop the Perfection
The house doesn’t have to be spotless for me to earn rest. Sometimes “good enough” is plenty—and the dishes will still be there after my break.
5. Ask for Help
I don’t have to carry it all. Letting my husband or kids take on small tasks reminds me that rest is easier when the load is shared.
6. Remember the Bigger Picture
When I rest, I’m not just helping myself—I’m teaching my kids balance. I want them to know that life isn’t just about running non-stop; it’s okay to pause.
These shifts haven’t erased my guilt completely (I’m still a work in progress), but they’ve given me permission to breathe without feeling like the world will collapse. And honestly? My family benefits from that just as much as I do.
